(Founder of the Midlands Counselling Clinic, Midlands Employee Wellbeing, and IACP Award Winning Psychotherapist)

Hi, my name is Brian Walsh and I help people to manage and overcome the emotional, psychological and often distressing effects of: Anxiety, Depression, OCD, Work Related Stress and Burnout, Low Self-Esteem, Physical Trauma, Psychological Trauma (survivors of current and historical emotional, physical and sexual abuse), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder, Suicidal Ideation and Self-Harm, Family and Relationship Issues and Life Changing Health Issues. I also support victims of crime to recover from the impact of their experience.
I am a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), and a Trauma Informed Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I am professionally accredited by the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). At the Midlands Counselling Clinic, I work compassionately and collaboratively with private clients who self-refer directly or who are referred by their GP. I provide also provide Corporate Mental Health and Wellbeing services and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) to small, medium and larger organisations in the Midlands (EAP). I have also provided counselling support to third level students in TUS Athlone.
My safe and confidential person centred approach to therapy is grounded in scientific treatment techniques on the process of change, and treatment approaches that are effective. I provide evidence based therapy in line with clinical guidelines and best practice. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), trauma informed Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Positive Psychotherapy. I passionately care about my clients. I believe they have the desire and the capacity to grow towards fulfilling their true potential, create the life they want and that they are the experts on their own lives. I will therefore work with you to help you to understand yourself and your life challenges more fully, and support you to find and develop your own character strengths and inner resources. In the process of counselling we will engage in a form of psychological or talking therapy that will offer you a chance to change how you think, feel, behave and with mindful awareness change your body response to recent or historical trauma, and to live a full and meaningful life.
I understand and empathise with the emotional and psychological symptoms of a client’s distress. My work is influenced by my belief in a person’s potential for personal growth following a traumatic event or life adversity. As such, I endeavour to broaden the scope of traditional psychotherapy by accentuating the client’s positive resources such as positive emotions, character strengths, resilience and meaning, in addition to attending to the symptoms of the client’s distress.
“Trauma is not what happens to you, it’s what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you” – Gabor Maté
