Brian Walsh MIACP, BSc (Hons).
(Founder of the Midlands Counselling Clinic)
Hi, my name is Brian Walsh and I help people to manage and overcome the emotional, psychological and often distressing effects of: Anxiety, Depression, Burnout, Low Self-Esteem, Physical Trauma, Psychological Trauma (survivors of emotional, physical and sexual abuse), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Suicidal Ideation and Self-Harm, Family and Relationship Issues, Life Changing Health Issues and Family Carer Burden. I also support victims of crime to recover from the impact of their experience.
I am a trauma informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist and I am accredited by the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). At the Midlands Counselling Clinic, I work compassionately and collaboratively with private clients who self-refer directly or who are referred by their GP. I provide wellbeing in the workplace talks to small and large organisations. I have also provided counselling to third level students in the AIT Athlone.
Professional Qualifications:
BSc (Hons) Degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy (First Class); Level 1 Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Trauma; Trauma Focused Relational CBT for PTSD; Professional Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy; and a Professional Certificate in Positive Psychotherapy. I trained with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre in the Counselling Process for Childhood Sexual Abuse, the HSE in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills, and Understanding Self-Harm. As part I my continuous professional development I attend training, master classes, workshops and keynote addresses delivered by internationally renowned trauma experts.
My safe and confidential person centred approach to therapy is grounded in scientific treatment techniques on the process of change. I provide effective, evidence based therapy in line with clinical guidelines and best practice. I passionately care about my clients. I believe they have the desire and the capacity to grow towards fulfilling their true potential, create the life they want and that they are the experts on their own lives. I will therefore work with you to help you to understand yourself and your life challenges more fully, and support you to find and develop your own character strengths and inner resources.
I understand and empathise with the emotional and psychological symptoms of a client’s distress. My work is influenced by my belief in a person’s potential for personal growth following a traumatic event or life adversity. As such, I endeavour to broaden the scope of traditional psychotherapy by accentuating the client’s positive resources such as positive emotions, character strengths, resilience and meaning, in addition to attending to the symptoms of the client’s distress.
I invite you to make an appointment for an initial assessment to ensure that I am the right therapist to help you. From there, we will decide on the right therapeutic approach to best meet your needs. I look forward to meeting you.
